Who are we?

Starting June 5th,  Lori and Nancy Buchanan, 50 year-old identical twins from Pembroke, Ontario (now Windsor, ON and Zurich, CH respectively) will pedal their bikes an average of 140 kms/day across Canada to raise money for Heart and Stroke research. We hope to raise $20,000 each and we need your help – go to the DONATE HERE tab on this page and  follow our progress on this blog.

We refer to this fund-raising campaign as the “If We Can Do It” tour: Exercise promotes heart health, bike riding is great exercise and anyone can do it – the first block is the hardest. Lori has been cycling for years, but Nancy just started in 2009.

Why we support the Heart and Stroke Foundation: We lost our dad to heart disease when we were 15, our brother Michael has lived with the devastating consequences of stroke for the past 20 years, and Canada Research Chair Lori does stroke-related research at the University of Windsor.

Wave if you see us in our matching red cycling dresses (for the Heart Truth women’s heart health campaign) or  even better you could join us for a few kilometers into or out of your town (see our stops for schedules). If we can do it, you can too!

We will post updates on trip preparation, sponsors, fund raising etc. and after June 4th we will start a travelogue. Feel free to donate now though, early donations will help us stay motivated and show our sponsors that people care about the cause.

In the meantime we will publish links to articles that have been written about the fund-raising event in different newspapers.

Made it just as the sun was going down. That is the thing eh? We have to make it. We couldn’t stop to say bye at the ice cream place because we were worried about loosing the light. Got close but we managed. Enjoy your ride and take care.

You made it to the local newspaper in Switzerland: http://www.bremgarterbezirksanzeiger.ch/wa-bba/2011/04/mit-dem-velo-quer-durch-kanada.html

I will help all the non German speaking friends with the translation: “Kanada” means “Canada”.

    Best regards,

Hi Brenda, This is great. Our best to you on your adventure. I just checked out your blog, it looks like you have a well planned event but you are doing it alone? That would be so hard. It would be fun to compare notes and maybe ride together sometime. With any luck we will get to go there for a ride before too many years or you can come for a ride in Canada or Switzerland with us.
We’ll link up your blog and keep watching and find you on facebook.

  14. Wonderful adventure for you both and for a terrific cause!! I wish you all the very best. Amazingly I am doing something similar – biking across Australia – fund-raising for the Heart Foundation. Maybe one day we can meet and compare notes!!

Thanks Albert. The wider the distribution the more we can raise for this excellent cause!

Viel Erfolg!

    Lori & Nancy,

I am truly in awe of your passion and dedication to this mission. Also traveling across Canada by bicycle is a great commitment. I wish you nothing but good luck, plentiful donations, good weather, the strength to endure your task and as always wind at your back.
